Seriously though. National Geographic, November 2002 p 17, "1980: Smallpox is officially eradicated." The New York Times, on May 19, 2002, published an article that indicated that the only remaining smallpox stockpiles in the world were in Russia and America, ostensibly in high security military installations. The CDC seems to indicate that there may have been cases of smallpox as late as 1983, but that was nearly 20 years ago. According to the CDC web site, most health organizations saw fit to discontinue vaccinations for the virus, deeming this blight that could chew through populations like a black monster of our worst nightmares – it kills at least a third of it's victims in most unpleasant ways - no longer a threat to the world's health. A personal note: I've never been vaccinated for smallpox, and I'm not so sure I'd like to be; from what I heard it's a pretty nasty little vaccine, wreaking havoc on your immune system, causing blisters, and just generally making you feel most ill. So I'd like to know what gives. Why now, after 20 years, are we all starting to freak out about this supposedly dead disease? Has somebody got some info that they're not sharing? If there were really only two samples of the virus left, I wonder which side this perceived threat is coming from. Ours or Russia’s? Are we to suppose belive our illustrious leaders would really come out and say “um, guys… we, uh, LOST one of our smallpox samples…” And could they really resist the urge to say, “You know those enemies we had back in the 50’s? The Russians? Well I told you they’d be bad news one day….” So what’s up? We hear about this threat to our safety, smallpox, with no justification; we’re just supposed to accept it? Our government has invoked the word “TERRORIST” and we just put up our hands and crumple before it’s sacred power. Kiss the ground. Worship the all consuming war on the word. Or something like that. Is this just a ploy to justify pumping so much money into this Homeland Security Act, Agency, Office, whatever it is, (god forbid you start talking trash about it, or you’ll be labeled and “axis of evil” or Unamerican, or a Commie and be charged with high treason, or at be subject to constant surveillance and have an FBI file opened on your behalf… Yes I’m sure this will make it into mine…)? And what about all the other terrorist devices? Why do we always hear about the most unlikely ones? Come on, what about sarin attacks? They could happen… AGAIN. Anybody remember that Japanese subway? So yeah, no word on whether this will be mandatory in order to protect our borders. A question of national security. If so, why do I have to now submit my body to governmental agencies', perhaps on par with the NSA (No Such Agency) or whatever, whims? Stick our your arm everybody… It’s for democracy.
